  TOEFL Independent Writing

  Topic:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

  Essay:

Is never being satisfied a problem even for people who are successful? When people have success, one of two things happens: contentment or ambition. They either get really satisfied, or the success becomes a little addictive and it makes them want to keep having something more or something different.

The secret of contentment is knowing how to be satisfied with what they have, and to be able to lose all desire for things beyond their reach. It seems that there are some people who know that enough is enough and so that they will have enough. They would like to believe that people brought nothing into this world and could not take anything out of it. Therefore, if they have enough of what they need, they would become satisfied with their success and want to keep thinking about it and talking about what they did. In this case, they do not spoil what they have by desiring what they do not have. Indeed, without being over-ambitious, they find contentment within themselves, and in contentment lies their happiness for being successful at a certain level that they deserve, and thus they are satisfied with what they have.

That being said, there are other people, how successful they are, will never feel content because they are ambitious, always looking for the next high. Ambition is so powerful a desire that however high they reach, they are not satisfied, and they are ambitious to always want better results. Perhaps, the life of human beings is one constant search for betterment rather than contentment; therefore people (for example, talented tennis players) always want better results. Honestly, if there were not anything but contentment in this world, people would not be any more of success than an animal like cow. In a sense, because many people are not content with their achievements, they want to be better. Remember that progress is not created by contented people, but rather by ambitious people who always want something more or something different.

To sum up, it seems to be human that many people are never satisfied with what they have; they want something better. In terms of human progress, ambition plays a more important role than contentment. So, if never being satisfied is an addictive problem, then most people have it, and at least it is a good problem.
